The work was carried out by Spark development partner Energy Saving Solutions Limited (ESS), a Kenya-based energy solutions provider, specialising in energy efficient LED lighting, building automation, energy management and solar energy installations for the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector. The company was contracted by Brookhouse School with the view to cutting the school’s emissions while simultaneously lowering its electricity bills. 

The energy efficiency aspect of the project centred on replacing over 1,900 existing lightbulbs with LED alternatives throughout the premises, including classrooms, hallways, sports hall and outdoor communal areas and pathways. Other energy saving measures included the installation of a heat pump, occupancy sensors and power factor correction equipment.

ESS also installed an 60kWp rooftop solar PV array, providing the school with a source of self-generated clean, reliable and emission-free power.
The project is expected to generate 63MWh/year of renewable generation and avoid 42 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, which when combined with the energy efficiency upgrades will lead to between 20-30% savings on like-for-like power bills.

Completed in January 2021, the work marked the first project to be completed under a financing agreement between Spark and one of its development partners.
