News in a nutshell: Spark Q2 update

Welcome to our first ever quarterly update for Spark Energy Services, the financing platform Camco set up to scale the deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives in Africa’s commercial and industrial sector.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been posting periodically about a range of exciting projects completed by Spark’s development partners (DPs) in Kenya and South Africa. But following completion of a successful USD 10m equity round in December and with a USD 19m debt round due to close imminently, the rate and breadth of project activity is expected to increase significantly.

The aim of these quarterly round-ups is to provide a short and sweet dose of positive sustainable development news, starting with this overview of what’s been happening with Spark during Q2:

Case Hospital – A 65kWp grid-tied solar PV system was commissioned in early June. The project was carried out by Spark DP enPower.life and represented Spark’s first project in Uganda.

Eden Glencoe – The second part of a two-phase solar PV project at Moriah Citrus Estates in South Africa was completed by Renen Energy Solutions in June, bringing the total rooftop solar installed to 255kWp with 800kWh integrated battery storage across two sites.

Ngong Hills Hotel – A 124kWp captive solar installation in Kenya that reached financial close in April and is expected to be fully constructed within days. The project is being carried out by Safi Power, with the panels installed across the hotel’s roof and new carport structure.

Mwembe Resort – A second hospitality sector project for the quarter, also being carried out by Safi Power. The works will see 83kWp rooftop solar being installed at the tourism hotspot in Malindi, Kenya, with 146kWh of integrated battery storage.

International University of East Africa – The second Spark-financed project in the education sector and also the second project in Uganda. This 130kWp rooftop solar project is being developed by enPower.life and is expected to be commissioned in August.

Thank you to all of our partners that have supported us during Q2, including our funders, development partners and customers.
